Man-Made Wealth

Money is entirely a human invention, so hoarding it can't be richness. A reflection on what it actually means to be rich.

Money is an entirely man-made construct. Because it is an invention, accumulating it cannot be the baseline for true wealth. It is a fragile metric, with no guarantee of outlasting the systems that created it.

To define true richness, the definition must be universal. It must have been valid before currency existed,1

and it must remain resilient enough to hold true in a dystopian future.

Richness is simply the ability to live a fulfilling life. It is the freedom to pursue your own dreams—not the dreams of the founder you work for. It is the presence of mutual, reciprocal love. These are the actual artifacts of a life well-lived.

Money remains an essential medium. Humans are built to exert effort, and currency is the tool we use to convert that effort into the shelter and sustenance our loved ones need. But it is only a medium, never the end state.

In the fullness of time, the currency you accumulate will be left behind. Optimize for the richness you actually get to experience while you are here.
